Self Care - Assessment and Counselling Skills
This course is designed to provide students with an opportunity to develop and integrate skills of problem solving, self-directed learning and delivering oral presentations in order to acquire and apply knowledge of selected self-care topics. Criteria for appropriate selection of non-prescription treatment options vs. physician referral and fundamental principles of self-care as well as a pharmacist’s moral, ethical and legal responsibilities will be explored. Learning will be achieved primarily through pharmacist presentations, a patient case work up and role-plays.
In small groups, learners will be responsible for presenting a patient case work up, highlighting drug and non drug options to treat a patient’s self-care condition. A facilitated question and answer period will follow in which the presenting team must field questions from their peers. Participation is required and will be graded in this portion.
The week following the presentations students will participate in role-plays hi-lighting a differential diagnoses and appropriate therapeutic options to treat the self-care conditions discussed previously. Each student will have the opportunity to role-play the pharmacist in these scenarios and to assess their peers' performance.
