Advanced Communication Skills
Learners will build on the foundations previously learned in CPS I through Communication Skills and Patient Counselling. Language skills such as summarizing, paraphrasing, transitioning, clarification and systematic interviewing will be emphasized and reinforced through large group activities. Flexibility in interviewing in order to meet specific patient needs is an expected outcome. In small groups, learners will have the opportunity to role play with standardized patients and receive feedback from both pharmacists and English teachers.
Course content is divided into three integrated sections:
Advanced Interviewing Skills Lectures:
Format: 3 x 3-hour large-group interactive sessions, individual counseling sessions (1/2 hour)
Advanced Interviewing Techniques #1 – Focused Information Gathering and Complex Information Providing
Advanced Interviewing Techniques #2 – Communication in Special Situations and helping patients manage therapeutic regimens
Advanced Interviewing Techniques #3 – Ethical Dilemmas
Patient Care Skills
This course requires the learner to integrate previously learned language, communication and clinical skills in a pharmacy practice context to meet patient care needs. Learners have the opportunity to apply their language and patient care skills by role-playing patient/pharmacist scenarios. Feedback is given on clinical skills and interviewing technique.
Format: Each learner has the opportunity to role-play 4 x 10 minutes interviews with a patient played by program staff or English language instructors. Role-plays will vary in difficulty with each successive week.
Standardized Patient Scenarios
Actors trained to portray patients present roles and situations that require the application of all clinical skills including: information gathering, identifying drug-related problems, management options (drug and non-drug), documenting, as well as the demonstration (by the learner) of communicative competence. Feedback is given to learners both from the facilitator and the standardized patient. Assessment on the integration of all skills, particularly clinical and problem-solving skills, is provided.
