Canadian Practical Experience (CPE)
The International Pharmacy Graduate (IPG) program at the Leslie Dan Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Toronto, has developed a Canadian Practical Experience (CPE) Program. The CPE program was designed to provide an opportunity for the IPG student to understand and develop Canadian pharmacy practice skills and is a component of CPS I and II.
Practical experience is an invaluable enhancement to the academic program and is STRONGLY RECOMMENDED. IPGs with practical experience are more likely to be successful in the academic program, since they will possess a context for the material that is learned in the classroom and lab settings.
During the CPE program the IPG will observe practical aspects and concepts of pharmacy practice. The IPG is assigned to a community practice site and a Pharmacist Mentor (PM) by the IPG program staff. The IPG is encouraged to work closely with the Pharmacist Mentor and pharmacy team members to optimize the CPE opportunity. The volunteer time of the Pharmacist Mentor and pharmacy team is recognized and greatly appreciated.
The objectives and activities of CPE are to be completed within the suggested timeframe. CPE 1 should be completed prior to the beginning of the CPS I classes and laboratories. The IPG Program staff has provided input to the CPE program development and will expect all IPGs to have completed this important aspect of their educational experience.
An additional component, CPE 2 is designed to be completed between CPS I and CPS II.
